Porth Neigwl (Hell's Mouth)

Llyn Peninsula

Porth Neigwl, better known as Hell’s Mouth, is a dramatic three-mile sweep of sand and pebbles on the southern Llŷn Peninsula. Despite its formidable nickname, the bay is a spectacular place for coastal walks, wildlife spotting and surfing. Its exposed position produces some of North Wales’ most reliable surf, while the surrounding cliffs give the beach an untamed, wonderfully remote character.

Plan Your Visit to Porth Neigwl

Porth Neigwl is reached from Llanengan, with access leading down towards the beach. Facilities are limited compared with the larger seaside resorts, so bring everything you need for your visit. Check the surf forecast, tides and local safety advice before entering the water, particularly because the beach is exposed and conditions can change quickly.

Why is Porth Neigwl called Hell’s Mouth?

The name is thought to refer to the bay’s large, curved shape, which resembles a mouth.

How long is Porth Neigwl Beach?

The beach stretches for around three to three-and-a-half miles along the southern Llŷn coast.

Is Porth Neigwl good for surfing?

Yes. Its exposed position gives the beach some of the Llŷn Peninsula’s most reliable surf breaks.

Can you see dolphins at Porth Neigwl?

Porpoises and bottlenose dolphins have been spotted in the bay, although sightings are never guaranteed.

Is Porth Neigwl sandy?

The shoreline changes with the tide, with sand becoming more prominent at lower water and pebbles visible higher up the beach.

Is Porth Neigwl suitable for dogs?

It is a popular destination for dog walkers, but visitors should check current local restrictions and follow beach signage.
