Sat at the top of Cardigan Bay, Criccieth has superb views of Snowdonia and the Cambrian coast. Sitting on the edge of the Llyn and Snowdonia, it is the perfect base for both coastal and mountain exploration.
In the heart of the town is Criccieth Castle, standing high on the cliff tops of the Cambrian coast, built by Llywelyn the Great, who ruled over Wales for over 40 years, the Castle is stooped in history, with Edward ( taking control of the Castle in 1286, eventually leading a revolt in 1404 where the Castle and town were taken back in Welsh hands. It wasn’t until 1867, when the Cambrian Coast railway line added a stop at Criccieth, that it became a firm favourite for tourists. With two beaches separated by the Castle and spectacular views, this place offers peace and tranquillity.
Food & Drink
With an abundance of restaurants, pubs and cafes. The seafront restaurant Dylans is a great spot to enjoy a drink basking in the sunshine. Cadwaladers is almost impossible to resist when walking past with their impressive display of delicious ice creams. Both Prince of Wales and Bryn Hir Arms often have live music in the evenings to help relax after a day exploring the North Wales coastline. Before heading out for the day, visit Idris Cafe to get a divine eclair.
Things to Do
Overlooking the town and Cambrian Coast, Criccieth Castle is a must-see. With Zip World a short drive away, you can explore the caverns at bounce below. Heading over to Glasfryn Parc offers hours of family fun, with go-karting, wakeboarding, archery and much more. With miles of the stunning Welsh Coastal footpath, you can explore the cliff tops of the Llyn Peninsula.
For the mountaineers amongst the group, why not take on Cnicht, known as the Welsh Matterhorn, with breathtaking 360 views of Snowdonia? Just around the coast from Criccieth is Mmorfa Bychan, where you’ll find Black Rock Sands, which is one of the few beaches in North Wales where you can take your car onto the beach, making it a convenient spot to have a picnic right out of the boot of your car.
