Explore Beddgelert

In the heart of Snowdonia, Beddgelert is a village steeped in culture, history and legend.

Beddgelert, which translates to ‘Gelert’s Grave’, is famous for the legendary tale of Prince Llywelyn’s favourite wolfhound. Llywelyn left Gelert behind to guard his son when heading out on a hunting trip. When returning from his hunting trip, he was greeted by Gelert, who was soaked in blood and his son nowhere to be seen. In anger, Llywelyn killed Gelert, and minutes later, he heard a cry from the upturned cradle, where his son lay next to the body of a giant wolf, which Gelert had fought to the death to protect Llywelyn’s son. Struck with remorse, Llywelyn carried Gelert, his faithful dog and buried him on the outskirts of Beddgelert next to the River Glaslyn, where you can visit the cairn of stones.

Food & Drink

At the heart of the village is The Prince Llewelyn, who is serving up traditional pub grub. For a more relaxed meal, Glaslyn is the oldest ice cream parlour and pizzeria in Snowdonia. Bistro Hebog serves up homemade, fresh, quality Welsh dishes. Tanronnen Inn has a strong reputation for its quality homemade food and warm welcome. A short trip away at the foot of Snowdon is Nant Gwynant and Caffi Gwynant, which serve some delicious and interesting hearty meals to fill you up after a long walk in the mountains.
