Caernarfon is steeped in history and culture, with the town being built around Caernarfon Castle. With its towering walls surrounding much of the town, it’s a step back in time. Its narrow cobbled streets are now lined with interesting shops and galleries, and it has an abundance of restaurants, cafes, and pubs all tucked behind the castle walls, revealing stunning views across the Menai Strait over to Anglesey. Food & Drink
From fine dining and gourmet pub food to a quick takeaway or a coffee and slice of cake to recharge your batteries, Caernarfon offers a diverse array of dining experiences. Right in the heart of the town is the infamous Black Boy Inn, one of the oldest inns in North Wales, built in 1522, serving delicious traditional food and a great selection of local ales, gins and whiskeys.
For arguably one of the best Chinese meals in North Wales, Fus is sat on the edge of Victoria Doc, serving up some of the finest food. Sheeps and Leeks is a relaxed fine dining restaurant bar in the centre of Caernarfon using locally sourced seasonal produce. You are never far from a great cafe in Caernarfon, with Caffi Maes and Caffi Betty’s being our local favourites.
Things to Do
Exploring Caernarfon has something for everyone. You can easily spend a week here without leaving with heritage, culture, activities and great food. Caernarfon Castle is a must-see in Caernarfon and any North Wales visit. After a morning exploring the castle, why not hop aboard the Queen of the Sea for a tour of the bridges or over to Llanddwyn Island? Set off on the Welsh Highland Railway to explore Snowdonia National Park, winding through the villages and stopping in Beddgelert on the way before ending up in Porthmadog, where you can carry onto Blaenau Ffestiniog, the slate capital of the world.
Caernarfon Golf Club is a championship course sitting on the edge of the Menai Straits with stunning sea and mountain views, this is a club close to Oysters heart with the founders (William and Jack) grandparents (Nain and Taid in Welsh) being the Chairman and lady captain of the glub many years ago. There is so much to do, see and explore in Caernarfon it really is worth a visit.
